ALAIN MAILLAND •   CHAMBORIGAUD, FRANCE

“I try to express the beauty of life by revealing the forces in wood... by carving I give soul to turned shapes.”

Alain Mailland began his journey with wood as a carpenter and mason. In the early 1990s, he slowly changed his focus from wood joining to woodturning and since then has dedicated himself exclusively to this craft. Mailland developed his own distinctive style and technique, particularly in hollowing, and developed specialized tools to turn wood flowers and carve works evoking marine life or biological specimens.

Mailland was born on the Ivory Coast and moved with his family back to France when he was five years old.  From age twenty to twenty-two, he studied at the National Art School of Cergy-Pontoise. Mailland’s gained a reputation for his very distinctive work and has been exhibiting and demonstrating internationally. His pieces are shown in many museums in France and the USA, along with major collections.
