PEGGY N. ROOT •   JONESBOROUGH, TN

Naturalist, Peggy Root is happiest when outdoors. Her paintings reflect her reverence and respect of the Southern landscape.

"My paintings represent some of my ongoing experiments painting ‘en plein air’. My canvases are painted outside on location, usually over the course of several weeks. I am not trying to provide a snapshot of appearances or a demonstration of virtuoso brushwork, but rather a meditation in paint on a particular place in a particular time and what it feels like. I work quickly moving around shapes and color, always striving to make a solid construction that most simply and elegantly states the significance of the scene. Because each year, each season and each day is so different from another, I am content to take what comes and consider it a gift." — Peggy Root

Root attended the Ringling School of Art and Design (FL) and Lyme Academy of Fine Art (CT). Her work has been exhibited in the Tennessee State Museum, George Bush Presidential Library (TX), Owensboro Museum of Fine Art (KY), Huntsville Museum of Art (AL), Museum of the Southwest (TX), Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum (WI) and Carroll Reece Museum (TN). Her paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the Southeastern United States including the permanent collection at the Tennessee Governor’s Mansion.

Peggy currently works from her studio in Tennessee.
