KREH MELLICK •   ASHEVILLE, NC

Kreh Mellick's unconventional drawings relate dark and whimsical tales from childhood folk stories and her own imagination. She uses these compelling images to share an inner dialogue that is not easily communicated in words.

"corners of rooms / claw foot bathtubs / widdled objects / faraway places / bits of wallpaper / ocean liners / I make drawings and / works on paper for these things. / Stories based on or appropriated from / memory, folk tales / traditions / and nostalgia. _ "I do not plan what the characters will look like or even the precise stories that will arise, when I sit down to work. So my drawings tend to come forward as I draw. There are certainly ideas or moments that inspire me TO sit down to work. I find that when I try to make a plan...it falls quickly away. I love this. I love that consistently, I will try to make something premeditated and fail, but with that failure there is something new to be found. That is the most wonderful feeling." - Kreh Mellick

Mellick received her BFA degree from Maine College of Art. Kreh also studied in the CORE Fellowship program at Penland School of Crafts (NC), a residency at the Oregon College of Art + Craft and a residency in Skagastrond, Iceland. She has exhibited in various venues including North Carolina, Arizona and the Institute of Contemporary Art (Portland, ME). Kreh currently works from her studio in Western North Carolina._
