ROBERT F. LYON Biography

Mixed media artist, Robert Lyon, gives new meaning to ‘paper and pencil’ with his striking sculptures. Thinking beyond the parameters of everyday use, pencils become ornamentation and paper is turned into wood and shaped with the lathe.

Lyon received his BA degree from the College of New Jersey and his MFA degree from Tyler School of Art (PA) and is currently a professor at the University of South Carolina. His work has been exhibited in numerous venues including the Wood Turning Center (PA), New Jersey State Museum, Alternative Museum (NY), New Orleans Museum of Art (LA), Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (NC), The Columbus Museum (GA), Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum (GA), Tampa Museum of Art (FL), Evansville Museum of Art (IN) and the Tweed Museum of Art (MN).

ROBERT F. LYON Statement

“Bringing together natural and architectural concepts with wood, I try to meld the activities of man with those of nature. Because the work in part, celebrates the wood itself, I allow the wood to move and crack as if it has a mind of its own. I am fascinated with the idea of control, the struggle to control the uncontrollable. I try to let the process take over so that the viewer can revel in the image, form and meaning.”
