WARD H. NICHOLS •   NORTH WILKESBORO, NC

Country landscapes, structures and objects recalling our heritage are a few of the subjects depicted in the representational paintings by Ward H. Nichols, whose realistic images illustrate an astute attention to detail and a desire to record a time past, a lifestyle almost forgotten.

Nichols has been painting professionally for over fifty years and has won more than thirty major awards, including the Grumbacher Award of Merit for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts. He has also served as Artist in Residence at the University of Indiana, The Greenbriar (WV) and West Liberty College (WV).

His work is included in the collections of the Huntington Museum of Art (WVA), Springfield Museum of Art (MA), Daytona Speed Museum (FL), El Paso Museum of Art (TX), Gutenberg Museum (Germany) and the Russell Museum (UK) and has been exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Birmingham Museum of Art (AL), Roanoke Fine Art Center (VA), Asheville Museum of Art (NC), Hickory Museum of Art (NC) and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (NC). Ward currently works from his studio in North Carolina.

“I feel like at times I am a documentary painter because so often I’ll go back to the same subject years later and it’s no longer there – it’s gone. I feel like, in a way, I’ve saved that barn or that object. I continue to follow a natural inclination towards a variety of subjects and I appreciate the differences and challenges presented by each.”
