DAVID SAMUEL STERN •   Brooklyn, NY

As a physical object, the photograph feels very trustworthy. It is discreet and made with a machine, so we view its content as logically coherent, even deeply honest. A photographic portrait therefore seems to give us a reliable representation of the person it portrays as he or she really was at that moment, and that person as he or she really was forever.

I make photographic portraits that try to find a way around this. These portraits are distinctly physical objects, so that perhaps we can consider the peculiarity of photographs as a medium and portraiture as a genre. Between the image of the person in the photograph and the person it represents much is hidden. In hiding some things, we reveal others.
