JUDITH DUFF (1945-2021) •   Brevard, NC

Judith Duff (1945-2021) created unique works of art that are both functional and decorative. After beginning the work on the wheel, she then altered the object using a variety of techniques to make each piece distinctive. The pots are fired in either a wood or gas reduction kiln to achieve a variety of surface effects.

“Since I became a full-time studio potter, I have watched my ideas come to life through my work with clay. The organic shapes and surfaces of my compositions are strongly influenced by my degrees in biology and painting. I want my creations to be used and enjoyed daily. As someone cradles a tea bowl in their hands or arranges food on a hand thrown platter or creates a flower arrangement in a vase with a natural ash surface, I like to think that I touch them in some way.” — Judith Duff

Duff received her BS and BFA degrees from Wesleyan College (GA). Her work has been exhibited at Ohio Craft Museum, Lancaster Museum of Art (PA) and Hickory Museum of Art (NC). Duff’s ceramics are in the collections of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design (NC), Crocker Art Museum (CA), Tokoname Museum (Japan) and the Icheon World Ceramic Center Museum (South Korea).
