In this new show, Julyan Davis brings together a variety of narratives; from the Gilded Age to Hurricane Helene, from a Napoleonic women’s travels in Alabama to the Mountain State Fair.
In 1988, Julyan Davis left art school in London to follow a lost piece of history: the story of Napoleonic exiles in the canebrakes of Alabama. A brief adventure became a lifetime’s career as an American painter capturing the forgotten histories and folklore of the United States. His narrative work continues to tour museums in collaboration with musicians, poets, storytellers and historians. It will next be shown at the Cameron art Museum in Wilmington, NC. Davis’s novel ‘A History of Saints’ (set in Asheville during the Great Recession of 2008) was a semifinalist for the 2022 Thurber Prize.
Alex Bernstein's exquisitely cast, carved, and polished glass sculptures will also be featured.
Opening Reception: Friday, September 5th (5-7pm)
